As a small child I do not rember much from WWII, but I know only that a lot of my family were murdered in Auswitch.

This is the last line of a poem from Hendrik Mattheus van Randwijk (1909 - 1966)

..A nation that succumbs to tyrants will lose more than life and goods: then the lights will go out ...

May be this not a good translation from Dutch to English, but I hope the point made therein will be clear.
